So today I have two mushroom flavored instant noodles I’ll be doing. First off will be this Unif/Tung-I mushroom pack. What’s interesting about this one is that Unif Tung-I is usually from Taiwan, but this one’s from Vietnam. Anyways, let’s try this one and see how it is.

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Notice all of the German on here!

The noodle block.

Dry seasonings.

Powder as well as veggies!

The seasoned oil packet.

Looks interesting.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added some baked chicken, yellow onion, green onion, Krazy Mixed Up Salt and Ajishima Kimchi furikake. The noodles are thin and have an almost buttery taste. The broth has a mushroom taste but its not overwhelming; almost like sauteed mushrooms. Pretty good – 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 073217060068 – get it here.

#1166: Unif Man Han Feast Sichuan Chili Eel Flavor Instant Noodle

Here’s one from T&T Supermarket up in Vancouver, BC! Many Taiwanese extolled the virtues of these Man Han Feast varieties, especially a beef version. I had the Spring Onion Eel flavor a while back and this is the only other one I’ve seen available in North America. So what does Man Han Feast mean? Wikipedia says:

Manhan Quanxi, literally Manchu Han Imperial Feast was one of the grandest meals ever documented in Chinese cuisine. It consisted of at least 108 unique dishes from the Manchu and Han Chinese culture during the Qing Dynasty, and it is only reserved and intended for the emperors. The meal was held for three whole days, across six banquets. The culinary skills consisted of cooking methods from all over Imperial China.[1]

If you want to read more about the myriad of exotic dishes, here’s the full Wikipedia article. Let’s check this unique variety out!

There were three large import/distributor stickers on the side of the outer packaging of the bowl (click image to enlarge). Contains eel!

Lots of info on the lid (click image to enlarge).

The noodle block.

The dry seasoning sachet.

A big packet with a lot inside!

Liquid base sachet.

Thick and oily.

A large retort pouch.

Spicy eel – and a lot of it. Smells excellent.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added sauteed green onion, Fresno chili pepper and Walla Walla sweet onion. The noodles are flat and broad. They have a nice quality to them; not too chewy but very good for a bowl noodle. The broth is rich with a good spiciness. The added bonus with this is the eel – it’s really good! Everything is rich and hearty and it’s definitely a feast to behold and consume. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 4710088100528.

The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Taiwanese Instant Noodles Of All Time 2013

Earlier this year, people from Taiwan voiced their displeasure with not being included in the 2013 Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time. They came in droves, shouting the praises of their beloved varieties. They were equally unhinged by having two varieties listed in my Bottom Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time 2013 list. Two were included there. After all of this outcry and seeing the pride and passion about their noodles, I thought it was a must to do a Top Ten Taiwanese Instant Noodles Of All Time 2013 list; these people are easily as interested in noodles as much as I am! This new list encompasses all of the Taiwanese varieties that I’ve reviewed thus far. So, without further ado, I hope you will enjoy The Ramen Rater’s top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time 2013 edition!

#10: Wu-Mu Beef Flavor Ramen (Mi Bo)

I tried these a couple years back and found them to be superb. The noodles are springy and high quality and the beef broth is deep, rich and really flavorful with a spiciness and sweetness that is truly excellent. Original review

#9: Wu-Mu Spicy Flavor Tomato Ramen

The noodles have a good consistency and character; a nice chew. The broth is interesting; there’s a nice spiciness that’s not overbearing, a sesame oil component and a tomato flavor. The tomato flavor doesn’t taste like ketchup but like real tomatoes. Original review here

#8: Ve Wong Instant Oriental Noodle Soup Artificial Sesame Chicken Flavor

A strong sesame oil infused broth along with nice chicken flavor were one thing, but the addition of a nice bit of ginger made this really enjoyable. This was a pleasant surprise. Original review here

#7: Wei Lih Jah Jan Mien Instant Noodles With Fried Soybeans Paste

So many people commented and were outraged that this didn’t make my regular top ten list. Jah Jan Mien is very unique in that you are presented with a saucy noodle and a bowl of broth. They pair really well; you have some noodles and then are drawn to slurp some soup.Original review here

#6: A-Sha Dry Noodle Mandarin Noodle – Onion Oil Sauce

The noodles are exquisite in that they have a wonderful chew and just plain make me want more. The flavoring is top-notch in this one – a strong and sweet onion flavor with sesame and soy notes . A masterpiece of simplicity. Original review here

#5: Deshome Aloe Noodle Red Onion & Sesame Sauce

Wide, flat noodles infused with aloe. The aloe is farmed by the company as well. They’re non-fried; dried in the hot sun! They have a freshness and texture that it really amazing. The red onion and sesame flavors intermingle nicely. Original review here

#4: Amianda Noodle Tachia Dried Noodles – Rou Zhao Meat Sauce

The noodles are spectacular – elastic and perfect chewiness. The flavoring is awesome! Has a sweet and salty braised pork flavor that is just out of this world. Original review here

#3: Unif Man Han Feast Sichuan Chili Eel Flavor Instant Noodle

The noodles are flat and broad. They have a nice quality to them; not too chewy but very good for a bowl noodle. The broth is rich with a good spiciness. The added bonus with this is the eel – it’s really good! Everything is rich and hearty and it’s definitely a feast to behold and consume. Original review here

#2: Deshome Aloe Noodle With Basil Sauce

The basil flavoring goes extremely well; reminds me of marinara but different. I am continuously impressed by how Taiwanese noodles that I’ve tried recently don’t contain a huge list of ingredients but rather they take an avenue of simplicity that works so nicely. This one is excellent – bravo! Original review here

#1: A-Sha Dry Noodle QQ Thin Noodle – BBQ Sauce

These noodles are great! Very light and thin and honesty they seem to be happy. It’s a perfect balance of texture and delicateness. They definitely are wonderful to chew. The BBQ sauce? Well, this isn’t what most would think of when you say BBQ sauce – it’s not the 99 cents a bottle stuff at the local grocery store. Instead, it’s a very enjoyable and tasty flavor with nice depth. Soy sauce, garlic, a slight spiciness and other flavors are represented in a wonderful flavor that doesn’t have the usual American ‘slather’ BBQ sauce feel. This is excellent. Original review here

Well, there’s the list! I hope you all enjoy it! By the way, I’ve been nominated for a contest for best food website where I live – please vote for The Ramen Rater here! Thank you In the next year, I’ll be reviewing many more Taiwanese varieties!

Hey what’s this?

Ah ha now I understand! Roger S., a reader of The Ramen Rater contacted me. He’d gone through The Big List and found two he could locally source that I’d not reviewed yet! Interesting flavors too – shallot beef and the oddly fascinating tart beef! Thanks again!

The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Chinese Instant Noodles Of All Time 2014

China: the birthplace of the noodle. Billions of serving of instant noodles are consumed there every year – more than any other country in the world!  I thought today being Chinese New Year (more widely known as Lunar New Year), it would be an opportune time to release a list of my favorite instant noodles that are made in China. These are the most memorable and finest varieties I have enjoyed from China of the 1,290+ I’ve reviewed over the years.

#10: Chencun Noodle Spicy Beef

This variety features rice noodles and a really great spicy beef flavor. I would consider it hearty; something I don’t usually find in a rice noodle based variety. Original review here

#9: Dragonfly Instant Noodles Onion Flavor

This is one of the best onion flavored varieties I’ve ever had. Dragonfly’s noodles are plentiful and of good quality. The onion flavor is full and rich. A bowl I look back on fondly. Original review here

#8: Master Kong Spicy Beef

Spicy beef? You got it! Excellent beef flavor and thick broth along with a slew of great noodles. Original review here

#7: JML Instant Noodle Artificial Stew Beef Flavour

You may be sensing a theme here – beef! What I find most engaging about Chinese beef varieties is that they have this little bit of sweetness that sets them apart from other region’s varieties. This one’s no different and quite enjoyable. Original review here

#6: Uni-President Unif-100 Pickled Cayenne Flavor Beef Ramen

The broth is interesting; it has a sort of beef-vinegar-spicy triumvirate melding together. Usually I’m not a big fan of vinegar and beef, but this worked well. The little peppers? They’re salty and pretty hot. They’re like pickled peppers. Original review here

#5: Dragonfly Instant Noodles Artificial Pork Ribs Flavor

Excellent noodles. The broth has a really nice sweet and meaty flavor – rich and excellent. Original review here

#4: Master Kong Premium Taste Roasted Beef Noodle

Seriously excellent beef flavor in this one. Very rich! Original review here

#3: Dragonfly Instant Noodles Artificial Hot & Sour Shrimp Flavor

Combine full, almost buttery noodles with a broth that has an almost tom yum flavor. Truly unique. Original review here

#2: Dragonfly Artificial Beef Flavor Instant Noodles

Beef again? Yes. Beef is a great flavor and so good in this one. A great beef flavor with an almost bacon like finish. Not only that, the carrot and cabbage hydrate perfectly and add a little crunch. Original review here

#1: Master Kong Potatoes & Stewed Beef Instant Noodles

The broth and noodles come together masterfully and this honestly tastes so good I’m going to say I’m truly sad I don’t have any more of it! It literally tastes like a dish centering on beef and potatoes. I love it. Original review here

Thank you for reading! I hope that if you have a favorite variety from China I’ve not yet reviewed or represent a Chinese instant noodle company that you will contact me. I would definitely like to have a broader base of Chinese varieties to sample and share with the world!

#1327: Unif-100 Instant Noodles Artificial Tart Beef Flavor

Here’s one sent to me by Roger S. – thanks! I haven’t had one of these Unif-100’s in a while. I had the Cayenne Beef a little while back, but this is one of the ones that are distributed here in the US quite widely. Chances are if you have an Asian grocery local to you, they’ll have some of the Unif line of instants. Now, while beef is a very common flavor where instant noodles are concerned, tart beef is something I’ve not encountered before. Let’s see what’s inside and how it tastes.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, put everything in a bowl and add 500ml boiling water. Cover for 3 minutes, stir and serve. What I do is I boil the water in a pot that has a lid, take the pot off, add everything and cover for 3 minutes and stir; seems easier to me.

The noodle block.

The powder base sachet.

A light powder.

The paste sachet.

Has a tart scent from vinegar.

The vegetables sachet.

Cabbage, chilli and other veggies.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added leeks, thin sliced sukiyaki beef, Fresno chilli pepper, and Nappa cabbage. The noodles . The broth is definitely tart beef flavor. I wasn’t sure what to make of it at first, but after a couple tastes I was kind of into it. It has a bit of spiciness as well which went well. The broth is a little oily from the paste, also something that was welcome here. The vegetable garnish was really nice and worked well. 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 6920077415627.

Here’s a video showing daily life in Guangzhou, China – the city where these Unif noodles are manufactured.

The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodle Bowls Of All Time 2014 Edition

Bowls of noodles. They’re made all around the world and are a great option for those with access to boiling water and are ‘on the go.’ Some are basic and have very little imagination to them or perks, while others are really full meals that include meat and vegetables, seafood and other niceties. I’ve review 1,410 different noodle varieties and of those, many have been bowls. Here’s a list of the best, most memorable bowls I’ve come across is my adventure in tasting.

#10 – Nissin Demae Iccho Instant Noodle With Soup Base XO Sauce Seafood Flavour – Hong Kong

The noodles in this one feature a familiar gauge and texture, however the broth is pretty stellar. It’s got a rich and hearty seafood flavor, and is augmented with a goodly amount of vegetable bits and lots of little dehydrated narutomaki. Original review here

#9 – Samyang Foods Ganjjampong – South Korea

This is what you call a ‘stir noodle.” The noodles steep in the bowl, are drained, and then a spicy seafood sauce is added. With some stirring, you have a really delicious and spicy melange of excellence. Original review here

#8 – Nissin King Spa王 (Spa Oh) Tarako Spaghetti – Japan

Here’s another one where the liquid is drained off. Tarako is a fish roe based sauce used in Japanese pasta dishes. The flavor is very good and the noodles came out just right. The seaweed bits go very nicely as well. Original review here

#7 – Nongshim Chapagetti Roasted Chajang Noodle – United States

Although originating in South Korea, Nongshim now makes these in Southern California. Chajang is a traditional Chinese black bean sauce that is wonderful with noodles and the nice part with this particular variety is that it’s the first I’ve seen in a bowl. What’s more, it’s easy to make and has excellent hearty flavor as well as great noodles. Original review here

#6 – Paldo Kokomen Spicy Chicken Flavor King Cup – South Korea

Kokomen is a South Korean ramyun with a light or white broth. It’s got a chicken and jalapeno kind of flavor that’s really quite excellent. The translation from pack to bowl is exemplary, losing none of the quality. Original review here

#5 – Acecook Comet Mori Yukino Tan-tan Men – Japan

This stuff is very red! The noodles are broad and flat. They have a very nice chew to them and are of a premium type. The broth is very rich and oily. It has a strong spiciness and is almost thick – but not in a bad way. A rich pork flavor abounds. The veggies and other bits hydrated quite nicely. Original review here

#4: Unif Man Han Feast Sichuan Chili Eel Flavor Instant Noodle – Taiwan

The noodles are flat and broad. They have a nice quality to them; not too chewy but very good for a bowl noodle. The broth is rich with a good spiciness. The added bonus with this is the eel – it’s really good! Everything is rich and hearty and it’s definitely a feast to behold and consume. Original review here

#3 – Maruchan Midori No Tanuki Instant Soba Bowl – Japan

This is a seriously excellent bowl of noodles. The buckwheat noodles have a delicate crumble that works so well here and the broth is nice and rich. The disk of tempura is a real treat. Original review here

#2 – Plats Du Chef Cuisine Adventures Chicken Phở Soup – Canada

I have to say this was a great surprise. I have had a throng of horrible Canadian instant noodles – in cups, bowls, packs – just horrible. This one is a diamond in the rough. It includes excellent rice noodles, a very tasty pho broth and to top it off, it’s got real chicken! This is a bowl to behold. Original review here

#1 – Nissin Raoh Rich Soy Sauce Flavor – Japan

Back again in the top spot is Raoh. The noodles and broth play so nicely together and the pork is quite good. A bowl of noodles to really enjoy by candlelight. Original review here

Welcome to the 2nd annual The Ramen Rater’s top Ten Taiwanese Instant Noodles Of All Time – the 2014 edition. In the last year, I’ve tried a slew of new varieties from Taiwan that were just amazing. Really discovered some great new products that I think everyone should try! What’s special this time is that I’m actually going to be in Taiwan during a layover on my trip to Malaysia! Figured I’d put this out a week early as it’ll be quite hard to post when I’m overseas. As a side note – I’m also going to be traveling through Singapore and then my destination of Malaysia – there will be top ten lists for those two countries coming as well as soon as I’ve reviewed enough varieties to have a wide sampling. Original review

#4: Deshome Sun Dried Noodle Chlorella Powder Noodle With Curry

This unique noodles really got me. First off, they’re green – really green! They had a nice texture and an amazing curry flavor that was truly great. As most of you know, I’m a big curry fan and it’s sweetness and rich taste were just spot on. Original review

#3: Mom’s Dry Noodle Onion Oil & Shrimp Flavor

It’s amazing how sometimes when I do a top ten list, some of the best ones are right before the cutoff for my list! I tried this one a week or so ago and let me just say – wow. The noodles are of an excellent quality and texture with a perfect chewiness. The flavor is well balanced with not too much saltiness but definitely not bland; it’s rich and delectable stuff. Original review

#2: Chering Chang Curry La-Men

This is the first variety I’ve tried of this brand and if the others they make are anything like this, they’re going to be doing very well with my reviews! The noodles are of a standard instant noodle gauge but have a very fresh feel to them. The curry broth is a wonderful sweet curry with a excellent richness to it. The included vegetable sachet was a show stopper on this one, with everything hydrating to perfection and a really ample quantity. Original review

#1: Mom’s Dry Noodle Sichuan Spicy Flavor

After trying their Onion Oil & Shrimp, I couldn’t wait to try this one – and it was a real treat as well. What sets this one apart are the noodles. Sun dried and with a perfect texture and thickness. They’re absolutely amazing. As for the flavor, it comes together via three sachets: mushroom oyster sauce, sesame oil and chilli paste. The heat is ample and so wonderfully balanced with the sesame and oyster sauce. The clear winner this year. Original review

Last month at the Chinese New Year celebration I went to hosted by the Seattle Singaporeans Meetup Group, I was talking to Clement, one of the event organizers. Og course, the topic of conversation was instant noodles (I will happily admit I rarely talk about anything else) and he had mentioned that there are these Chinese sausages that are good in beef instant noodles. I’d been wanting to give that a try, and today was the day! Let’s check it out!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add everything to a bowl and add in 500ml boiling water. Cover and let steep 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The powder base sachet.

A fine light powder.

The liquid sachet.

A little spicy and beefy scent.

The vegetables sachet.

A decent amount!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added Kam Yen Jan Chinese Style Sausage, sweet onion, spring onion, red pepper flakes and mung bean sprouts. The noodles are so-so – not the most backbone, but have a good quantity. I think a little chewier would have been nice. The broth was pretty good – nice beef flavor but a little light on the spicy. I think it would’ve been better with 400cc water. The veggies hydrated well. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. The Chinese sausages went well – they had a nice texture and a sweet flavor. EAN bar code 6920077418024.

A new year brings the The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Taiwanese Instant Noodles Of all Time 2015 Edition. After reviewing over 1,750 different varieties, these are my favorites hailing from Taiwan. Taiwan’s instant noodles are different from those of any other country; so curious about what direction their flavors go next. With that, let’s dig in to the new list for 2015!

The video presentation of The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Taiwanese Instant Noodles Of All Time 2015 Edition.

#10: Wei Lih Jah Jan Men

The noodles have a very nice gauge and chew. The
flavor of the noodle is a soybean paste with a very nice kick to it. The broth for
sipping has a salty, onion-garlic kind of feel but a little different. It works
so well together; either one on it’s own would be unremarkable, but the two in tandem as a meal is genius. Original review

#9: Unif Man Han Feast Sichuan Chili Eel Flavor Instant Noodle

The noodles are flat and broad. They have a nice quality to them; not too chewy but very good for a bowl noodle. The broth is rich with a good spiciness. The added bonus with this is the eel – it’s really good! Everything is rich and hearty and it’s definitely a feast to behold and consume.  Original review

#8: A-Sha Dry Noodle QQ Thin Noodle – BBQ Sauce

#1 in 2013. Original review

#7: Deshome Sun Dried Noodle Chlorella Powder Noodle With Curry

This unique noodles really got me. First off, they’re green – really green! They had a nice texture and an amazing curry flavor that was truly great. As most of you know, I’m a big curry fan and it’s sweetness and rich taste were just spot on. Original review

#6: Mom’s Dry Noodle Onion Oil & Shrimp Flavor

It’s amazing how sometimes when I do a top ten list, some of the best ones are right before the cutoff for my list! I tried this one a week or so ago and let me just say – wow. The noodles are of an excellent quality and texture with a perfect chewiness. The flavor is well balanced with not too much saltiness but definitely not bland; it’s rich and delectable stuff. Original review

#5: Chering Chang Curry La-Men

This is the first variety I’ve tried of this brand and if the others they make are anything like this, they’re going to be doing very well with my reviews! The noodles are of a standard instant noodle gauge but have a very fresh feel to them. The curry broth is a wonderful sweet curry with a excellent richness to it. The included vegetable sachet was a show stopper on this one, with everything hydrating to perfection and a really ample quantity.Original review

#4: A-Sha Dry Noodle Veggie Noodle Baby Grass Noodle With Toona Sauce

The noodles have a very good elasticity to them. They have a broad flat nature and a premium texture and chewiness. The flavor was a soy and something else – the Toona aspect I imagine. It had an earthiness which was subtle and light – just right. I very much liked this; it seemed like something that would pair well with the acidity of tomato and richness of some kind of beef with wine juxtaposition. Original review

#3: Mom’s Dry Noodle Sichuan Spicy Flavor

After trying their Onion Oil & Shrimp, I couldn’t wait to try this one – and it was a real treat as well. What sets this one apart are the noodles. Sun dried and with a perfect texture and thickness. They’re absolutely amazing. As for the flavor, it comes together via three sachets: mushroom oyster sauce, sesame oil and chilli paste. The heat is ample and so wonderfully balanced with the sesame and oyster sauce. #1 in 2014. Original review

#2: Mom’s Dry Noodle Sour & Spicy Flavor

The noodles are really primo – excellent gauge and chewiness. They’re thick and have a gourmet quality to them. The flavor is really great. It goes from an initial hit from the black vinegar’s sourness, then mulls around with the heat and almost transforms into a sweetness at a point. It’s a very active flavor that kept my tastebuds fascinated the whole time. Excellent! Original review

#1: A-Sha Dry Noodle Veggie Noodle Tomato Noodle With Vine Ripened Tomato Sauce – Taiwan

In the number one position we have the very first Taiwanese instant to make the annual top ten overall list. . But there’s no denying – this is absolutely marvelous stuff. The noodles have a great gauge – broad, flat and soft with a light chew. The great part is the tomato flavor – when I opened the sachet of sauce the whole room smelled like fresh tomatoes. Not only that, there’s more than enough sauce to flavor all of the noodles. Original review

#10 – Unif Man Han Feast Sichuan Chili Eel Flavor Instant Noodle – Taiwan

The noodles are flat and broad. They have a nice quality to them; not too chewy but very good for a bowl noodle. The broth is rich with a good spiciness. The added bonus with this is the eel – it’s really good! Everything is rich and hearty and it’s definitely a feast to behold and consume. I should also note – this is one of a line that includes a braised beef variety amongst others. I would very much like to review every one of these, both in pack and bowl form. If you can source them and would like to send me some, please use the above contact form to do so! Thanks! Original review here

#9: Paldo Jjajangmen Chajang Noodle King Bowl – South Korea

Another in Paldo’s King Bowl line. Again, this one has thick and chewy ramyun but is a broth-free variety, coated with a delicious and savory black bean chajang sauce. Sticks-to-your-ribs! Original review here

#8 – Nissin Chikin Ramen Donburi – Japan

This one really brings me back. My first brush with exotic instant noodles was the Nissin Chikin Ramen package version when I was around 8-10 years old. This one really builds upon that, including a freeze dried block which springs to life with boiling water. It contains scrambled egg and spring onion – and delivers. This is excellent, classic and delicious. Original review

#7 – JML Spicy King Bowl Noodle Spicy Chicken Noodle – China

The noodles as usual plumped up nicely as they engorged themselves on the broth. good gauge, good chew. The broth is definitely strong and worthy of the top ten spicy list – it means business! Sichuan chilli heat is abundant. The oiliness is great and the hydrated vegetable bits are good as well – a tasty spicy bowl. Original review

#6 – Seven & I (Nissin) Gold Sumire Ramen – Japan

The noodles are thick and chewy – very premium. The broth has a very rich miso flavor that had a little thickness and a nice oiliness. The vegetables and bits hydrated perfectly – nice bits of ground meat and menma float happily about and are of good quality. Original review

#5 – Tokushima Seifun Yakibuta Ramen – Japan

The broth has a nice saltiness and soy flavor with just a little touch of sweetness. The pork flavor finds it’s way into the broth as well which is spectacular. The pork has a nice sweetness and ‘fall off the bone’ texture to it which is pure delicacy. The army of decent sized slices of narutomaki were amazing, and the spring onion and bamboo shoots were perfect. A bowl of amazing taste and quality. Original review

#4 – Nissin Raoh Rich Soy Sauce Flavor – Japan

The noodles and broth play so nicely together and the pork is quite good. A bowl of noodles to really enjoy by candlelight. Raoh slips to 4th place this year. Original review here

#3 – ORee Garden Malaysia Green Curry Noodle – Malaysia

A newcomer in both variety and brand to this list for 2016, ORee Garden’s green curry bowl is amazing stuff. Decent noodles are brought to life with a very rich and flavorful green curry broth which acts more like a tasty sauce. Then, they augment it with the inclusion of tofu puff and long bean. Exquisite! Original review

#2 – Choripdong Hurricane Rice Cake Topokki – South Korea

It’s red. It’s got a thick spicy and sweet sauce. It’s got ramyun. It’s got topokki. This was a real find – Just looking at the picture makes me want some right this instant. One of the most wonderful bowls of noodles I’ve ever had. Slipping from first place last year. Original review here

#1 – Nissin Gyoretsu-no-Dekiru-Mise-no-Ramen (Shrimp Tantanmen) – Japan

Talk about amazing. Now, on most of these bowls, you’ll notice I’ve added my own garnishes. I don’t count them in my reviewing – everything is reviewed prior to any additions I make. This is one where I’ve added nothing and just look at it! This one had very good noodles to start off. The broth was a very thick prawn infused decadent flavor spectacle. Then there’s the little crunchy topping and the other garnish they provide and this is just amazing stuff. Wow. Floored. Original review

I think I should explain the symbol in the upper right hand corner before anything else. While the symbol may bring up thoughts of World War II, this actually has nothing to do with oppression; this is a Buddhist symbol denoting that it is safe for those who practice strict vegetarianism. Here’s a little from wikipedia about it:

In China, Korea and Vietnam, monks are expected to abstain from meat. In Taiwan, Buddhist monks, nuns, and most lay followers eat no animal products or the fetid vegetables – traditionally garlic, Allium chinense, asafoetida, shallot, and Allium victorialis (victory onion or mountain leek), although in modern times this rule is often interpreted to include other vegetables of the oniongenus, as well as coriander – this is called Su vegetarianism. Some Zhaijiao lay adherents do not eat any meat.

As for the symbol, it is considered an ancient symbol of auspiciousness in Hindu and Buddhist culture. It is immediately recognizable in the West however with Nazi Germany. Here’s some about that –

At the end of 20th century, and early 21st century, confusion and controversy has occurred when consumer goods bearing the Buddhist symbol have been exported to North America, and mistakenly interpreted by Western consumers as a Nazi symbol.

When a ten-year-old boy in Lynbrook, New York, bought a set of Pokémoncards imported from Japan in 1999, two of the cards contained the left-facing Buddhist swastika. The boy’s parents misinterpreted the symbol as a Nazi swastika, which is right-facing with 45 degree rotation, and filed a complaint to the manufacturer. Nintendo of America announced that the cards would be discontinued, explaining that what was acceptable in one culture was not necessarily so in another; their action was welcomed by the Anti-Defamation League who recognised that there was no intention to be offensive but said that international commerce meant that “isolating [the Swastika] in Asia would just create more problems”.[135]

In 2002, Christmas crackers containing plastic toy red pandas sporting swastikas were pulled from shelves after complaints from consumers in Canada. The manufacturer, based in China, said the symbol was presented in a traditional sense and not as a reference to the Nazis, and apologized to the customers for the cross-cultural mixup.[136] In 2007, Spanish fashion chain Zara withdrew a handbag from its stores after a customer in Britain complained swastikas were embroidered on it. The bags were made by a supplier in India and inspired by commonly used Hindu symbols, which include the swastika.[137]

I think it’s a little sad that instances such as this could have been times when the public in the West could have been made to understand that this symbol has been used by religions to denote auspiciousness and vegetarianism for a lot longer than in WWII. But instead of learning, it gets pulled from sight in the marketplace. Let’s give this vegetarian rice vermicelli a try.

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Does not contains meat. To prepare, add package contents to a bowl and add 500ml boiling water. Cover for 2 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

The rice vermicelli.

A dry base sachet.

Powder and vegetables.

An oil sachet.

Smells like sesame oil.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts and tofu puff. The vermicelli didn’t hydrated as it should have in two minutes and was a little stiff and kind of had that dry spiderweb kind of quality I dislike. The broth was nicely accommodated by seaweed but the sesame oil and earthy flavor just didn’t work for me at all. 0.5 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8888217006105.

Here’s the last of the Uni-President varieties my wife spotted a few months ago at Foody World up in Richmond, NC! They were $1.50 apiece which seemed very good. Really like the graphic on this one – looks really neat. Let’s crack into this one and give it a go!

#3278: Uni-President Imperial Big Meal Beef Flavor - Taiwan

This is a big and somewhat heavy bowl from Taiwan. I’ve reviewed the version not made for export (this one usually goes to Hong Kong). What was funny about this one is that I found it up in Canada at a store in Aberdeen Centre – defintely not where this belongs. It’s full of beef and import restrictions would bar it from Canada. What a nice surprise! Let’s check out this one with Australian and New Zealand beef!
